Kiu Kavousi
In Mark Jenkin's June 26th article, he describes Kiu Kavousi's lastest work as a mix of vibrant colors and skillful use of paper to depict semi-imaginary landscapes.
"Nearby and remote scenery meld in the semi-imaginary landscapes of Kiu Kavousi, a local painter who was born near the Caspian Sea. Working with thinned and layered acrylics, the artist makes all-over paintings whose subtle shifts of color suggest fields of wildflowers or mountain slopes. Often, and more realistically, he renders boats beached on sandy shores, framed by large expanses of blue above. Writing of his childhood in northern Iran, the artist describes how the Alborz Mountains divide the country “like a giant fabric curtain.” Perhaps that image is the inspiration for Kavousi’s paintings on cardboard, folded horizontally to resemble a slatted blind, or on paper that’s vertically and irregularly rumpled. The effect of “Blue Ridge Mountain,” the show’s largest piece, relies as much on its deep folds as its exuberant hues. It’s a craggy landscape in itself, as well as a representation of one." Check out Voice of America's exclusive coverage of Kavousi's June 2015 show, "Prelude to Summer", featuring the latest works of artist Kiu Kavousi. Landscape Paper SculptureHorses"It has been said that God created butterflies in His most playful mood and horses in His most noble. The horse symbolizes beauty, grace, and power. Since the beginning of time, they have been loyal companions to humans. Their stunning beauty and power have been a great subject in art and literature. As a child, seeing these creatures roaming around the pastoral countryside, I was fascinated. My paintings are a homage to their joyful play and indomitable spirit."

“My paintings are translucent in color and in lyrical forms. I am in a never ending search for a poetic relationship between color and form. They are a dance of forms and colors like the earth and moon, visual feasts that emanate from my soul manifest themselves as lyrical compositions. They are complex yet simple like Gershwin rhapsodies; ecstatic and exuberant as Vivaldi four seasons. They are joyful expressions of human emotions and an invitation to the viewer to come along and take a mystical journey to the lyrical world of Rumi, discover its hidden mystery and celebrate the triumph of the human spirit.”
Landscape"Tranquility and timelessness define my idyllic landscapes. Growing up on the shores of the Caspian Sea, I used to wake up to the gentle sound of the sea with the backdrop of the magnificent mountain range in all of its majesty and splendor. Afternoons were filled with glorious sunsets over the sea. Countless moments were spent rowing by rickety wooden boat into the sea where the shore almost disappeared in a dazzling play of lights and haze. The vast expanse of landscape was magical and heavenly. It conjured a sense of freedom and calm. Years later, transplanted to the east coast of the United States, I fell in love with the eastern shore and the Chesapeake Bay and its tranquil coves and islands. My landscapes are a heartfelt homage to both parts of my life."
